| Hello hello! Happy weekend! I hope it rains less than in Munich where you are—but if summer is keeping us waiting, we'll keep on learning. :) Today, we'll start with... Escape Velocity by Geoffrey Moore If the name Geoffrey Moore sounds vaguely familiar, that's because, if you're cruising around in the world of business, you've likely heard his theory of "the diffusion of innovation." The idea is that new technologies must penetrate various market segments—or, rather, people's attitudes—in order to reach the mainstream. Unfortunately, there's a big chasm between the innovators and early adopters—the earliest 15% or so who adopt new tech—and everyone else. Crossing the Chasm is Moore's most famous work, and it explains how businesses can close this gap. As so often, however, I think this, more obscure book of his is far better. In Escape Velocity, Moore lays out a complete theory for building a business that won't just make it to market but can last for hundreds of years. When Medium's CEO Tony Stubblebine first pointed me to a talk by Moore about this book, I instantly grabbed it, and it changed how I look at business forever. His hierarchy of the 5 powers even applies at a personal level, if you ask me. An all around great and criminally underrated book! Here's what you'll learn in today's video:
If you're curious about why some businesses last for centuries while other great ones (like Nokia and Kodak, for example!) falter, watch this video. Not your cup of read? Here are 2 other titles you might enjoy:
That's all for this Saturday. Have a wonderful weekend! Happy reading,
