| Hi there, Nik here! Today is...my birthday! I turn 34 years old. I always learn many lessons each year, but one that has stuck with me is this: Try to push the important things forward a tiny bit every day. It adds up. Speaking of focus, today's video feature is an amazingly prophetic book: Amusing Ourselves to Death by Neil Postman In 1984, Neil Postman caused a big stir at the Frankfurt Book Fair. He had analyzed 2 classic novels that painted a dark future for humanity: Brave New World and 1984. The former says society will "go out with a whimper." That we will be slaves of consumption, drugs, and cheap satisfaction. The latter warns of a surveillance state that completely takes away human freedom. Both have stood the test of time, but Postman believed one had way more relevance in 1984 than the other—and that effect has continued to play out in the 41 years since. In Amusing Ourselves to Death, he explains it all. Whether you've read the originals or not, don't miss out on this amazing analysis of our culture, spirit, and reliance on technology. Here's what you'll learn in today's video:
If you want to protect your attention and understand technology's long-term implications on our lives, watch this video. Not your cup of read? Here are 2 other titles you might enjoy:
That's it! Now back to the pool for me for some more birthday relaxation—and I hope there are a few hours of rest coming your way too. Happy reading, PS: If you want to support my work while getting a lot more out of Four Minute Books at the same time, you can consider buying something from the store or getting a Lifetime Membership. Every dollar directly goes to the costs of running the project or buys me time to write more good stuff. Thank you! :) |
