| Hellooooo there! At 36 degrees Celsius, it's a hot summer weekend here in Bordeaux, where I'm attending a wedding with some friends. It's always nice to read a few pages whenever I can escape the heat. Pages in books like... The Little Book of Ikigai by Ken Mogi A friend lent me this book while I was visiting for dinner. I had never heard of it before, but it turned out to be one of the best books on ikigai I've ever read. Mogi is Japanese, born and raised. He has an innate understanding of the concept. The book talks about the 5 pillars of ikigai: - Start small.
- Release yourself.
- Practice harmony and sustainability.
- Find the joy in small things.
- Be in the here and now.
Mogi provides lots of anecdotes and examples from Japanese everyday life to help you recognize ikigai in your own. The Little Book of Ikigai is more of a feel-good book than a how-to book—and that is the point. Ikigai is not something you do with a 10-step checklist. It's something you feel. In your gut. In your heart. In your soul. Here's what you'll learn in today's video: - Ikigai has nothing to do with work. It's simply about valuing life.
- We can find ikigai everywhere with 5 pillars.
- A Japanese tea ceremony shows all 5 pillars in action.
If you want a relaxing read that'll teach you a philosophy of calm and happiness, watch this video. Not your cup of read? Here are 2 other titles you might enjoy: - How to Become a Straight-A Student by Cal Newport shows you the techniques A+ students have used to pass college with flying colors, ranging from time management and note-taking tactics to writing great theses, to help you focus and do great work.
- The Upside of Irrationality by Dan Ariely shows you the many ways we act irrationally while thinking what we do makes perfect sense, and how this irrational behavior can actually benefit us as long as we use it properly.
That's it for today. Let me know what you learn from these, and have a great weekend!
