Let's go! Hot Off The Press
Quote of the Week"Advice like these are not laws. They are like hats. If one doesn't fit, try another." — Kevin Kelly The Big 3 From the Book A Book Brought to LifeAfter practicing for just one year, in 2006, Joshua Foer became the USA Memory Champion. He also set a new record for memorizing a deck of 52 cards in 1 minute and 40 seconds. In Moonwalking With Einstein, he tells his story — and gives you plenty of useful memory tips along the way. It's an excellent explainer of the history of memory, how its importance has declined over the centuries, why our capacity to remember is in such a sad state, and what we can do about it! In today's video summary, you will learn that...
If you want to understand why most of us have such a bad memory, and how you can easily practice getting better at remembering, watch this video. The Tribute
This week, both Charlie Munger, Warren Buffett's 99-year-old fellow billionaire and business partner, and Henry Kissinger, legendary politician and Nobel Peace Prize recipient, died. Just a few weeks back, I saw Munger's birthday was on January 1st and thought: "I hope he makes it to 100." Alas, what Kissinger had managed, for Charlie, it was not meant to be. Naturally, he would have cared the least about that. Known for his dry humor, curt wit, and no-BS takes during Berkshire Hathaway's annual meetings, at 99, Munger long saw his death coming: "I've written my obituary the way I've lived my life, and if you want to pay attention to it, it's alright with me. And if they want to ignore it, that's OK with me too. I'll be dead," he told CNBC in his last interview. Besides weaning Warren off the approach of buying mediocre businesses for cheap prices and instead buying great ones for good prices, he also gave his partner the same advice: "Write your obituary the way you want it written, and then live your life accordingly." If you want to learn more about Munger and Kissinger, the former of which we've covered extensively on Four Minute Books, here are a few great resources:
Finally, I once wrote a breakdown of a really cool thought experiment Munger ran with some students: How to build Coca Cola from scratch, starting in 1884, and turn it into a trillion-dollar company. May both of these legends rest in peace. Here's to everything we can learn from them!
