I'm a huge Japan-fan. In 2013, I had the incredible opportunity to go to Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, and even Hokkaido with a friend. Ten years later, it's still one of few places I'm dying to go back to.
Ikigai is an incredibly useful concept from the land of the rising sun. Unfortunately, the most popular book on the subject...doesn't do a great job of explaining its subject. That's why I wrote today's 4-minute explainer piece.
While the Japanese language is far more complex and open to interpretation than most Western lingo, one of the better "holistic" translations of "ikigai" is "reason for being."
The best way I can briefly describe it is "anything that makes your life worth living." Why and how is that useful? In this week's "Four Minute Idea," you'll find out.
I hope this idea will make you feel calmer, happier, and — ironically — less stressed about finding your big, overarching purpose in life.
As you'll see in the piece, ikigai is just as much, if not more, about enjoying the little things we experience every day as it is about having a driving force in life.
