Hey hey, it's Nik. Since my recent list of Marcus Aurelius' best quotes was so well-received, I thought I'd branch out and curate a broader set of Stoic ideas. Well, it's ready.
Stoicism is an ancient Greek philosophy that started some 2,300 years ago. A wealthy merchant named Zeno suffered shipwreck and, while recovering in Athens, became the student of a philosopher. Eventually, he started his own school of philosophy. Zeno commonly taught via public discussions in column-lined walkways — so-called stoas — and it is from there that Stoicism both spread and received its name.
"We are not given a short life but we make it short, and we are not ill-supplied but wasteful of it. Life is long if you know how to use it." — Seneca
The core idea of Stoicism is that in order to live a happy life, all we have to do is live an ethical life. "Virtue" as in "moral goodness" is the highest value in Stoicism, and the way we can attain it is through 4 attitudes (courage, temperance, justice, and wisdom) and 3 areas of practice (perception, action, and will). How do you get started? Pick up some of the best Stoic ideas from early Stoic philosophers — and that you can easily do via quotes.
For the best possible overview and distillation of Stoic ideas, I split the list into the following sections:
